[audio]E100: Week six: Is Ruth also among the Judges? - Dr Tim Bulkeley
The book of Judges starts badly and gets worse. The end gets completely censored, never read in church, even the Sunday School stories get their naughty bits covered up! The book ends with a slogan in 21:25 "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit." Which neatly prepares for the books of Samuel except by the time we reach the end of 2 Kings (even if we are slow learners) we realise that kings are not much better...

[audio]E100: Introduction to the plan - Tim Bulkeley
Hereâs my overview of the E100 plan before I started doing the podcasts. It is mainly concerned with how (and why) they have selected the readings they have. It will be interesting to do another at the end, and compare my impressions of the list of readings âbeforeâ and âafterâ.

[audio]E100: Week 7: Bible stories for adults - Dr Tim Bulkeley
If you thought Bible stories were for children, nice little tales with a nice little moral at the end, then you probably have not been following the E100 up to this point, and you certainly have not been reading the bits the organisers censored out! Bible stories are NOT like that, rather they tell in the most realistic way possible the stories of real people, who we must watch, listen to and then work out how we'll respond...

[audio]Genesis 1: Beginning right - Tim Bulkeley
This chapter is the beginning of the Bible, and beginnings are important. We learn why the world was made, and how God is "different". Among other structural details we will notice is this one (the diagramme may help as you listen): Day Creation Day Creation One Light Four Luminaries Two Water and Sky Five Birds and Sea Creatures Three Land and Vegetation Six Land animals (inc. [audio]E100-23: Joshua 1: Joshua Succeeds Moses - Dr Tim Bulkeley
This chapter focuses on Joshua taking over from Moses, now that (at the end of Deuteronomy) Moses is dead and gone (though no one except God) saw him die. In the reading we learn a lot about how the Bible views leadership, and it does not easily fit with any of our modern, well-worn patterns. Thank God! We also (not coincidentally) learn about cooperation among God's people.

[audio]E100-45: Proverbs 16:1 - 18:24: What are proverbs or what is Proverbs? - Dr Tim Bulkeley
Proverbs are pithy sayings. Short, thought-provoking, often using vivid imagery proverbs work by making you think. But they are often used as a source of quick simple answers. The book of Proverbs is a collkection of loads of such sayings with a long preface and short epilogue that encourage young men to meditate on this advice. The goal of Proverbs is lives lived well. A proverb can be applied like a Band Aid to appropriate situations, BUT their greatest value is when you meditate them...

[audio]Twisted tales: or should the book of Judges be censored? - Tim Bulkeley
Judges is definitely not suitable for Sunday School reading, the bits that are told are firmly censored, and few of us go back to notice what we are missing. But, if we do, what we find is a book chock full of horrid twisted tales, brutal, brutish and sadly not short. Why? Can such a nasty collection of stories be justified, or should it simply be banned?

[audio]What is the Bible? (Part 2) a hologram? - Tim Bulkeley
Many people think the Bible is like a hologram, any part of which shows the truth. The practice of scholars, preachers and teachers, of citing single verses or lists of verses to demonstrate something, encourages this view. The claim that the Bible is âinerrantâ in all its parts seems to seal the idea. Yet in the Bible God itself told us in the Bible that it is false!

[audio]E100 Week 8:The Fall of Israel - Dr Tim Bulkeley
"The fall of Israel" is a theological (not historical) title. This five covers almost the whole history of the Israelite kingdoms from David to the destruction of Jerusalem. The Deuteronomistic History (Joshua-Kings) from which they all come (cf. remarks on Judges) tell the story with the end in view, one important goal of these books is to explain the fall of Jerusalem and the exile. So this is a good selection to understand what is going on: 1...

[audio]E100-44: Proverbs 1:1 - 4:27: Where is wisdom to be found? - Dr Tim Bulkeley
Most of Proverbs contains collections of proverbs (pithy sayings about life) but the book has a nine chapter prologue and a half chapter epilogue. The epilogue is a poem describing an ideal(ised) wife. The prologue seeks to motivate the student (a young male - notice all the "my son" language) to follow his mother's advice and live a faithful, respectable, respectful, honest life. The last chapters sex up this motivational speech by picturing Wisdom as a woman, who should become the young man's ...

[audio]E100 week 4: Exodus 1-18: Freed from other masters - Dr Tim Bulkeley
In this podcast, before looking at the passages selected for week 4, I'll do a quick overview of what I think we should have noticed from Genesis (a sort of 30 second recap of weeks 1-3 ;) Then I'll try to set the scene for week 4, which covers the story of the Exodus. Phrasing it that way though is perhaps not the best summary of Exodus 1-18. After listening to my podcast maybe you can suggest a better one?

These two chapters, as well as some (now several millennia later) boring stuff about wells, contsain some of the heights and depths of human experience. A birth to a childless couple, well well after normal childbearing years, and nasty vindictive selfishness. But also an outrageous demand from God, blind obedience and a few hints of something greater to come...

Eric Auerbach's famous quote about Biblical Narrative being "fraught with background" can sound puzzling. Today we begin at the beginning with the first teo chapters of Genesis. I also dealt with Genesis 1 in a previous post. It's certainly hard to find a superhero in the Bible! Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and even Moses - all fail - though some of them look good the way we try to... by comparison with their neighbours, family or friends think of how Moses shines when compared to Aaron. But Samson! [audio]E100-90: 1 Thessalonians 4:13 - 5:11: The Coming of the Lord - Dr Tim Bulkeley
To my mind this passage provides a nice example of what Paul was on about in the previous reading, many people get hung up on the picture of Christ descending from heaven, and the possibility of people rising to greet him, and spend their time constructing imaginative and creative theologies and multi-million dollar businesses writing books about "the rapture" claiming that the notion is a "biblical doctrine"...

[audio]E100-26: Judges 2:6 - 3:6: A vicious cycle or A divine alarm-clock? - Dr Tim Bulkeley
There's a nasty cycle that repeats time and again in Judges, and that forms a theme of the history in the books of Samuel and Kings too: * Israel forgets that Yhwh is the ONE who has given them everything * they start to worship/serve other Gods * God allows an enemy to oppress them * they call to God â who raises up a strong leader who by God's power rescues them This pattern was described in Deuteronomy so these books (with Joshua) get called the "Deuteronomistic History" by scholars...

[audio]E100-2: Genesis 3 - Tim Bulkeley
This is the passage that makes sense of Gen 2, and of human life. Our world and our lives are broken and spoiled because of sin. Sin is not breaking rules, it is breaking relationship with the maker by wanting to assume the power ourselves. The reading of Genesis 3 is here. There is another take on this passage, talking about Bonhoefferâs paradoxical take on âconscienceâ in an earlier podcast.

[audio]E100-4: Genesis 8:1-9:17 Sin and grace after the flood - Tim Bulkeley
If this was a merely human story youâd expect God's bold attempt at drastic punishment to have an equally bold result. Either humanity reformed, or the rebellion gets deeper ;) But of course neither is possible. humanity is unreformable, just try making a few worthwhile New Year's resolutions to prove that ;) nor is rebellion any deeper possible. So what we get instead is a second old-fashioned word, to add to the collection of outmoded terms we began with "sin" earlier...

[audio]E100-3: Genesis 6:5-7:24: Sin and Righteousness - Tim Bulkeley
I think I've avoided really looking at this passage, and I notice that my teaching has focused too much on the signs of two source texts being edited together, and noticed too little how the story works, because like the genocide texts it offends my sense of right. It is certainly one of my favourite Bible passages, indeed it is many people's favourite Bible chapter. Isaiah 40 is just full of superb phrases and pictures.
